4/28/15 Case Study (50 word min)

The Right to Know

June is a 23 year old newspaper reporter who reports on crime in Atlanta.  On her way to work one day, she recognized several police officers hanging around her neighborhood.  She had interviewed some of them before and figured that, because they weren't in uniform, they must be on an undercover operation.  She called Karen, her source in the police department, who told her that a serial rapist had been striking in that neighborhood and there had already been five victims.  Karen also told her that if she reported on the sting, the rapist could be tipped off and skip town.  He might go to another city and attack more women.

June knows that if she reported the sting, no cop in the city would ever speak to her again.  But she also knows that women in her community are in imminent danger and feels that someone has to warn them.  What should June do?

  1. I think that she should tell her friends and tell the women around her that she knows. I don't think that she should report the sting because it could only make things worse. If this guys finds out whats going on he will probably skip town and hurt people some where else. Its definitely a bad situation and something needs to be done. He needs to be stopped before more women get hurt.

  2. Well, I think June should confirm that there is a rapist in the neighborhood. Becauase what if that isn't what the cops are looking for. What if they are looking for a burglar or something. She can't just write about something that is false. That would make the police force even more upset and it would scare all the women and people in the area. I think she should maybe talk to the police force first to confirm it. Also, maybe try and spread the word to the women to be on the look out just in case.

  3. If there really is a rapist in the community, June should talk personally to the women in that neighborhood about the situation. That way they are warned and can be on the lookout, but the rapist won't know. She shouldn't do a report on this case because it could ruin the police's chances of catching him, and then he would get away and probably find more victims in a different place. So she should just contact the women to let them know what's going on instead of making a big scene about it all.

  4. June should tell them. Thats a scary thing if there is a rapist roaming around. She has to sacrifice her personal feelings for the good of everyone. If she didn't warn everyone most likely it would happen to someone else. And Im sure she would feel awful if something were to happen and she did nothing to stop it.

  5. I think June should let women know. Everyone is saying, "women that she knows", but at soon as you tell 2 or 3 people, everyone will know. That's today's society, especially because of this subject. They don't necessarily need to report him because that's one of the easiest ways the rapist would find out. I think the women she knows would be more important, and if these policemen can't find him, maybe he shouuuld go to another town so real police men can find him. Hahaha.

  6. I don't think that it is such a good idea if she tells all of them or makes it public.Yeah she doesn't want her friends to get hurt she want them safe and be away from the possible chance of being rapes, but if she does say something about it then she may harm other people in a different city. The cops told her not to say anything and if she does she will lose her job because they aren't going to talk to her anymore. I think at the very max she could talk to her friends personally and explain to them the problem, but I don't think she should say anything to everyone.

  7. If I was her I wouldn't REPORT it, but I'd definently be talking about it. Word of mouth would provide warning for the women.

  8. Aaaaand that wasn't quite fifty words. I forgot that. But everyone else kind of hit it on the head as to what I was thinking. I don't really agree with Olivia. I wouldn't report on it. It isn't worth losing her connections with the police department, etc. This kind of reminds me of Watergate too. Deep Throat risked it.... but I still don't think she should report on it.

  9. I think she should find him and kill hime and stop him or report him and tell people to be careful about things you do around town.
