Nebraska State Fair Board Considers Changes for Next Year The State fair is already thinking about state fair decisions. This coming year, the fair will get a new website and several additions are planned for the Raising Nebraska exhibit which was new last year. They are also talking about other additions to the building that could include a component that features people from other countries and explains how Nebraska products reach their destinations. Other ideas include a career finder related to agriculture, increased focus on ag science and livestock production features, new ways to use the conversation area and a possible feature that simulates what it is like to ride a horse through a livestock task.The board approved a $20,000 capital request to build a new website.The new site will allow staff members to update from anywhere via the Internet, will allow users more access to online services and will integrate social media and the mobile site.

Recent research by the firm Agri-Pulse shows that a number of organizations are steering veterans to the farm, and several initiatives are providing training, marketing and financial help to soldiers who wish to return to the nation’s agrarian roots. The Farmer-Veteran Coalition is an organization that helps returning veterans find employment and training on farms and ranches and in other agriculture-related careers.
Farm Bureau Convention Talks Property Tax and Livestock On Monday and Tuesday hundreds of farmers gathered in the lovely town of Kearney to talk agriculture. They discussed anything from food to technology in agriculture. Steve Nelson the President of the Farm Bureau Federation says that he would like to see property taxes for farmers go down. With the amount of land you must own to be a farmer you are paying a bunch in property tax. Nelson says that he doesn't like and things that it need to be lowered. Jason Kvols was told by his parents to go get a college degree so he did in buisness. He went to work in Tennessee but that didn't work out. He came back to the farm and took over for his dad. He has just opened two hog barns. He think this will be great for his kids because if they get a career or job and it falls through then they can always go to the farm and work there. I think it is great that he was thinking about his kids when he started the hog barns.
The government (the Farmer-Veteran Coalition) is working to give soldiers the opportunity to farm when they return home from serving. It's a program they're calling "Armed to Farm." Love that. Word play is fun. Anyway, Tom Vilsak (Secretary of Agriculture) said, “ ... Rural family and agricultural families send their sons and daughters into military service and community service more frequently and in greater numbers.” Which means our farmer supply is low, so we're tying to encourage those people to farm when they get home.
It's the second largest farm show in the country, with more than 20,000 people heading to the Nebraska Power Farming Show at the Lancaster Event Center this week. While dealers are selling new equipment and technology, many farmers are waiting for a decision from congress before they make any big

Fish Farming Finds its Way to Midwest 52-year-old Scott Garwood of northeastern isn't growing corn or raising cattle- he's farming fish. Specifically, thousands of Australian freshwater species called barramundi. It's often called the Asian sea bass because of it's sweet, white flaky flesh. He keeps them in large tanks in a warehouse. The consumption of seafood is higher than the wild fish populations, so many people have moved to raising fish themselves to help this problem.
