"While the farmer holds the title to the land, actually it belongs to all the people because civilization itself rests upon the soil." --- Thomas Jefferson

  1. This is cool. It's a pretty liberal thought. The farmer may own the land, but technically, it is everyone's because we all live on the soil.

  2. I think this quote means that a farmer may own his land but we all have a little right to it because we have all been civilized here.

  3. You can own the land but everyone around helps you to get what you get out of the dirt. Everyone lives off of the soil not just the farmer.

  4. Even though the farmer is the one who legally owns the land, it belongs to us all because we all use it in some sort of way.

  5. Yeah, pretty much what everyone else has said. You can't really own the earth.

  6. Even though the farmer owns the land, technically all of it is our soil. Hmmmmm, this quote is rather invalid in my opinion.
