Thursday 4/9/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Sarah works with a great group of guys who have become like brothers to her.  They have a professional yet fun relationship.  They occasionally joke, tease, and play small practical jokes, but is has been a respectful environment.  Recently, Aaron was hired and things have changed.  Aaron is young and talented and having lots of fun at work.  He enjoys the joking and pranks but doesn't seem to know when he's crossed the line.  His jokes now include crude and vulgar references that have become outright offensive.  They are sexually explicit and particularly degrading and disrespectful to women.

As times, the other guys seem to think he's hilarious, and at times they groan at how disgusting he is.  When Sarah tries to let Aaron know how she feels about his comments, he responds with, "Oh, sorry, I keep forgetting there's a chick working here," or, "it was only a joke!"  Sarah is starting to feel uncomfortable at work and tries to avoid Aaron.  She loves her job and her "brothers" who work there, but she's wondering if she should start looking for a new job.  What should Sara do?

  1. Sarah should talk to the guys. She needs to tell them how she feels and ask them to talk to Aaron about it. If they are really her "brothers", they will stand up for her and stop it. If the guys don't want to talk to him, Sarah should notify someone of a higher power about the situation. No on should feel uncomfortable at their job and Sarah shouldn't have to change job because of it.

  2. I think she needs to confront Aaron and all of the guys at once. Let them know that she is a girl and she finds some of his jokes and comments offensive. If they are such good friends, then they would listen. But if it keeps going on, I think she should look for another job in the mean time. So then when she gets the job, she will leave and then they will feel really guilty that THEY were the reason of her leaving.

  3. Since Sara and the brothers have been there longer I think that the brothers should start getting on Aaron about it. If he doesn't stop they should all go to their boss and let him know the situation. Then Aaron should be warned by the boss and if he does it again then hie should be fired. If everyone was happy before Aaron got there why should they let one person ruin it.

  4. Sara should go to management. She should not have to deal with these kinds of things. She should not have to quit her job because some jerk guy makes her feel uncomfortable. If management doesn't do something she should have her friends talk to him. And if that doesn't work I guess in that situation I would probably break down and get a new job. But I believe that management would step in and help solve the problem.

  5. I would probably just punch him in the face. And tell him to say another joke and see if he does. I would hit him again if he didn't stop. And if that didn't work, I would go tell higher authority and get it taken care of. You should be in a safe zone at work and not feel uncomfortable.

  6. I think she should go to higher authority and tell them that Aaron is making her fell very uncomfortable. Since she has been there longer then he has she should not have to quit her job for some jerk.
