Kendra is the sales department manager and her boss is concerned about the appearance of some of their sales clerks, particularly Hunter. On his right arm, Hunter is sporting a large new tattoo of a vampire with blood dripping form its mouth. Kendra agrees some customers might find the tattoo offensive and that he should cover it up.
When Kendra talks to Hunter about it, he becomes defensive and claims customers think his new tattoo is cool. He says he belongs to a vampire organization and this is a big part of his life now. He tells her he's also considering having his teeth filed into points. He says she is being discriminatory because another employee has a tattoo of a cross on his arm and he has not been asked to cover it. Kendra likes Hunter because he is a good employee and one of their top salespeople. She knew he was into vampire movies and books, but she had no idea about how important this was in his life. The tattoo is also violent which borders on being problematic in terms of company expectation guidelines for salespeople. What should Kendra do?
Hunter does have a good point about the other guy that has a tattoo. To not discriminate against anyone, I think Kendra should make a new rule that all tattoos and maybe include body piercings besides earrings should not be worn or covered. I personally think tattoos are inappropriate in some places and should not be seen in the work place. She may think his is creepy just because of what it is, but she needs to make sure everyone is treated equally. So she either needs to accept it or ban them on everyone.
ReplyDeleteHunter has a very good point if someone else has a tattoo and isn't being asked to cover it that's not fair. If he is being asked to cover his then everyone should need to cover their tattoos. I think that it should become a rule that everyone has to cover all tattoos and if they don't they will be fired. I don't like tattoos that are visible and I think all tattoos should be covered in a work area.
ReplyDeleteI think that Kendra should talk to the other guy if she is going to talk to Hunter. She shouldn't just single out one person. It doesn't matter what the tattoo is. If one person has to cover theirs up then anybody else who has one should have to cover theirs up like he does. I think she still need to tell Hunter that he needs to cover it up, but she also needs to tell the other guy to cover his up and she should tell Hunter that she is going to tell the other guy to do the same. The tattoo is violent and could be breaking the work code anyway so I would just tell everyone to cover up there tattoo so that nobody can see them up.
ReplyDeleteIf Kendra makes Hunter cover his tattoo up, she needs to make all employees cover theirs up as well. Hunter is right, it is discriminating against Hunter if he is the only one who has to cover it up because it's a vampire. She needs to just make it a rule that all current and future employees cover up any tattoos that would show when they are at work. I think everyone would look more professional this way.
ReplyDeleteShe needs to make everybody cover it, and create a clear system for employee personal appearance expectations. At my job, we're supposed to look "presentable" all the time, and there's a specific list of what's not considered presentable, and flashing tattoos around is on that list. And, everybody is treated equally that way.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a good point that if he needs to cover it the other one should, but then again his is breaking the guidelines, and the other one isn't. Also, it is promoting violence and stuff, so that's not good. I think since it's breaking the guidelines, he needs to cover it because it was probably explained to him before he even got the job.
ReplyDeleteP.S. don't show a tattoo around Mrs. Ediger. She won't hesitate to give her opinion on how trashy it looks. EVEN IF IT'S RELIGIOUS WITH A DEEP MEANING. yes i'm still bitter about that. *evil eye*
