Nebraska Leads Looking for New Members A state wide program that is recognized nationally as an innovative organization is looking for new members. This organization began 33 years ago to recognize members. Each year up to 30 highly motivated men and women are selected from five geographic districts across Nebraska.Program Director Terry Hejny says that it's a great program to get involved in to help you develop as a person.
Avian Flu Warnings high over US Outbreak While U.S. poultry producers enjoyed one of the most successful years on record in 2014, there are concerns with the industry as Avian influenza (AI) continues to spread worldwide, including to a number of states in the U.S. Domestically, the current Avian Infuenza outbreak has caused poultry producers to tighten security procedures to help avoid growing global trade disruptions. For example, in January, China halted U.S. poultry imports and more recently, Mexico, the European Union and a number of other trade partners have stopped buying the meat originating from Minnesota, Missouri and Arkansas, where the outbreaks of the disease have occurred.
It's Agreed: White Potatoes Are Nutritious Recently, the WIC program has announced that white potatoes will be allowed to be purchased. In the past it hasn't been permitted (I know, I work at a grocery store), and it really made some potato farmers mad, so they lobbied. After a long process, and lot's of committee voting, the white potato was approved for the WIC program.
According to the 2012 Consensus of Agriculture, organic product sales by farms and ranches in the United States has continued to grow. In order to learn more about these organic trends, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) is now creating the 2014 Organic Survey. Bruce Ekland, State Statistician of the NASS New Jersey Office, says, "The Organic Survey comes in direct response to the continued interest in organics among consumers, producers, businesses, and others." He also says, "This is an opportunity for organic producers to provide more detailed data to help provide the industry with a reliable source of information to use in justifying research projects and fund requests for the continued growth and sustainability of organic farming and ranching in the United States."
Avian Influenza is spreading worldwide, including a few US states. Currently it The current outbreak is in commercial poultry producers, but pork and cattle raisers have also have had issues, and they must be very careful about handling potential animal heath crisis’ if they let their guard down, there could be serious consequences.

The United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is conduction the 2014 Organic Survey to learn more about the trends of organic agriculture in the United States.
White Potatoes are Nutritious The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for (WIC) is meant to provide nutritious foods for low-income pregnant women and their children. Since 2009 white potatoes have not been put on this list. The U.S. Department of Agriculture determined that white potatoes should not be included on the list of foods that may be purchased with a WIC voucher. The outcome was reversed from its position of nine years ago. The one positive reason that was cited for adding white potatoes to the list was that it could increase potassium intake for recipients.
While U.S. poultry producers enjoyed one of the most profitable years on record in 2014, averaging margins of 13 percent before interest and tax, concerns are mounting within the industry as Avian influenza (AI) continues to spread worldwide, including to a number of states in the U.S.
The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) is offering two tours before the 2015 World Pork Expo opens that will provide visitors a unique opportunity to gain insights into U.S. agriculture. A two-day tour, set for June 1-2, will travel to locations in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, showcasing hog, feed, bioenergy and equipment production. The one-day tour on June 2 will provide a look at modern swine production and food marketing, as well as agricultural research and product development. Both tours include meals on tour days, along with free, three-day admission to World Pork Expo, the world’s largest pork-specific trade show
